Social Services

Our campaign joins the call for a 21st century economic bill of rights that guarantees all of our people the right to the basic necessities of life — and guarantees those rights regardless of income, race, religion, gender, country of origin or sexual orientation.
Illinois has a number of essential services we provide to each other for our mutual success. In the wealthiest country in the world, none of us should be forced to suffer without the basic necessities of food, shelter,  healthcare, education or employment. To care for each other, we must provide the necessary programs to ensure all have an opportunity for success.

Child Protective Services:
Child Protective Services provides protection for Illinois children in dangerous situations at home. Teachers, doctors, nurses, and many other mandated reporters reach out to the department when they suspect a child is being harmed. While one of the most important departments in Illinois, it is understaffed and underfunded.  We need to protect our children and provide the necessary funding to hire more caseworkers to properly investigate reports. We have not done everything we can to protect our children, and this must change.

Food Services:
In the wealthiest country in the history of the world, no one should go hungry. When employers refuse to pay living wages, Illinois residents are forced to rely on programs like SNAP and WIC to feed their families. We must expand these services, and ensure that all of our neighbors in Illinois don’t go to bed hungry.  The right to vote means nothing if you can’t afford to eat. Additionally, any business with more than 1,000 employees, with workers forced to rely on government food assistance, should be required to reimburse the government for the assistance their employees need.

Medical Services:
About 6.5 percent of Illinois residents — or about 817,000 people — were uninsured in 2016, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.   Many thousands more are underinsured, with high deductibles, high co-payments and out of pocket expenses.

Our current system is broken.  We pay almost double per person compared to any other major industrialized country, yet our health outcomes are mediocre at best.  Life expectancy in the United States is declining. We can cut the amount we spend IN HALF and still insure every single person in our entire country.  Medicare for All is the economically and morally responsible choice.
