Rights for the Disabled

We champion expanding the rights of people with disabilities. 22% of our citizens in Illinois has a disability. Despite the progress that has been made over the past two decades, we unfortunately still live in a world where people with disabilities have fewer work opportunities and where the civil rights of people with disabilities are not always protected and respected. People with disabilities experience much higher poverty rates than people without disabilities. We have a moral responsibility to ensure that all of us have the support they need to live with dignity.
Most people do not realize how behind our culture is when it comes to the rights of our brothers and sisters with disabilities. We need to ensure our fellow citizens that cannot support themselves entirely, can have access to the supports they need.

This includes:

  • Guaranteeing jobs that pay living wages to all people with disabilities.
  • Ensuring that all people with disabilities get the medical care they require, both physical and mental care.
  • Reviewing and changing the restrictions on the disabled for losing their benefits when they are married.
  • Changing the discriminatory practice of not allowing spouses to be paid for caring for their partners, especially when their caretakers were paid before they were married.

We believe we need to work with our citizens with disabilities and listen to their needs, and make sure we are allowing all of our citizens to have the best possible path for success.
